A CAKE sale held by youngsters raised cash for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

Last Thursday three young people collected more than £42 for the hospital’s IMAGINE appeal by baking and selling cakes outside the newly reconfigured Trinity Methodist Church in the centre of Ellesmere Port.

Rhys Coldrick, Sean Jones and Becky Williams are taking part in the World Worth Living In programme run by Port Reach, a Christian charity.

The programme is a pilot project funded by Fair Shares lottery funding and Port Reach is working with West Cheshire College to identify young people who would benefit from and enjoy the programme.

Stef Boyle, the co-ordinator of Port Reach, said: “The three bakers were absolutely amazing; Sean is on a catering course at West Cheshire College and is a superb cook, Becky’s flair for advertising was obvious when she uploaded photos of their produce to a social networking site to entice all her friends to come along and Rhys’s gift for sales had people crossing the street to find out what was going on.

“It is a real privilege to be leading this programme and to see the young people grow in confidence and self-worth each week.

“I also got first dibs on the cakes – which were fabulous!”

Four other members of the group prepared a meal for 15 people as their team challenge, testing the newly completed training kitchen at Trinity Methodist Church.

The Rev Christine Jones was invited to lunch and said: “It is so good to see young people here and using the facilities, it makes all the upheaval of the renovations worthwhile.

“This is the dream, to see people growing and improving their skills and being community. And the food was great too, my compliments to the head chef and team leader Steven Head.”

Becky said: “It’s been that much fun that a few of us are going to volunteer with the community cafe in Trinity when it opens this year.”
