SHOPPERS in Widnes are warned to keep their eyes peeled for pickpockets, purse thieves and bag snatchers following a wave of thefts across the town centre.

Police are once again raising the alert about crooks who often work in pairs or larger teams, preying on the unwitting.

At least 52 purse and bag snatches have taken place in the past six months.

Some target shoppers as they wait in queues and others are on the lookout for bags which are left unattended for even a few moments.

PC Janine Lea, of Widnes Neighbourhood Policing Unit, said: “Shoppers should be aware what has been happening and ensure they take any precautions to reduce the risk of becoming a victim.”
