THE Vauxhall plant in Ellesmere Port beat off rivals from across Europe to be crowned the Large Enterprise of the Year.

The talent and ambition of the region’s automotive companies lit up the inaugural awards ceremony of the Northwest Automotive Alliance.

With General Motors’ plant in North Road leading the way, the impressive achievements of businesses large and small were paraded at the high-profile ceremony at Liverpool’s Crowne Plaza Hotel.

Ellesmere Port beat off fierce competition from GM’s other European plants to be named as Large Enterprise of the Year, after securing the investment to build the new Astra, along with a training grant from the European Commission.

Port plant director Tom Schmidt received the award from former Chester MP Gyles Brandreth.

Mr Schmidt said afterwards: “It is an honour to receive this award.

“It is a true indication of the dedication and commitment of our employees.

“Even during these unprecedented economic conditions, we continue to work together to secure the future of the plant as we strive to become a world-class manufacturing facility.”
