WREXHAM council leaders have agreed proposals for the county borough's land use during the next 10 years.

Members of the executive board met last week and voted in favour of adopting the draft Unitary Development Plan (UDP).

The plan is a strategy for land use until 2015 that every authority is undertaking to allocate land use and enable the EU to plan waste management, environmental and social strategies.

The UDP provides a framework for decision-making and proper consideration of development and conservation interests.

Though a majority voted in favour of proceeding with the UDP, Grosvenor councillor Gwyneth Roberts objected to the deletion of sites on Colliery Road from the plan, saying the owner of the land was not notified and therefore unable to object.

She said: 'These sites have been taken out of the settlement limit and I would like them to be put back in.

Chief planning officer Lawrence Isted said it would be impractical to consider individual cases at this stage.

'My fear with this is that there are many people who want their sites to be reconsidered,' he said.

'It's been decided that the site shouldn't be included in the settlement limit and we have been through a process since 2000. It's been considered repeatedly and dismissed on appeal.'

Llay councillor David Broderick suggested mandating the chief site officer to have another site meeting would resolve the situation.

Offa councillor Alun Jenkins said: 'The public interest is best served by adopting the plan as quickly as possible without a public inquiry.'
