A HIGH school’s resident author used football to spark pupils’ interest in reading.
On Friday, May 17, author Jon Mayhew spent the afternoon at Neston High School working in the library with the Year 7 Premier League Reading Stars.
As part of the National Literacy Trust, Premier League Reading Stars is an innovative programme that uses students’ passion for football to support their reading.
At Neston High School the programme is run by English teacher Laura Jolley and school librarian Suzie Evans.
As a reward for the current group of Premier League Reading Stars’ dedication to the programme it was arranged for Jon Mayhew to visit.
Suzie Evans said: “This was a fantastic afternoon in which Jon shared his journey from reluctant reader to author as well as treating the boys to some very spooky stories.
The boys were incredibly engaged and inspired by Jon and we hope to organise for Jon to work with the boys again in October.”
Jon Mayhew’s brand new adventure Monster Odyssey: The Eye of Neptune is available now in shops.
Boys include Joe Dowthwaite, 12, Jack Jones, 11, Joshua Rigby, 12, Jamie Leadbetter, 12, Mark Cullen, 12, Jacob Hand, 12, Joe Smith, 12, Sam Vickers, 11, Michael Sherlock, 11, and Louis Hanner, 11.
