PUPILS at Weaverham High School are grinning like Cheshire cats after achieving unprecedented success at regional level last weekend.

The Lime Avenue school provided all the members of the Cheshire inter boys squad that defeated rival counties from across the country at the North West Combined Events championships in Blackpool.

The under 17s squad of Mike Koral, Jason Oswell, Luke Johnson and Kieran Berrington finished more than 2,000 points ahead of Merseyside, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Cumbria, Lancashire and Greater Manchester.

Not to be outdone, Jennifer Martin starred in the county’s victorious inter girls squad while fellow Weaverham team-mate Katie Gardener grabbed an individual title.

Cheshire won the overall title thanks to the performances of the both girls and boys squads at junior, inter and senior levels.

The inter boys and girls have now qualified to compete for Cheshire in the National Finals at Bedford on September 19.

Head of PE Jonny Goodall said he was extremely proud of his athletes. He said: “Not only to have that many athletes but to win the overall title with pupils from just one school is unheard of.

“Perhaps it is just possible that Weaverham could beat the rest of the country at the national finals. One thing that is for sure is that they will have a very good go at doing just that!”

Team manager Tony Brown added: “This is an outstanding achievement and shows a high standard of all-round ability in Cheshire county athletics.”
