GARDENERS and allotment holders came together to mark the opening of the refurbished Price's Lane allotment shop in Wrexham.

Council leader Aled Roberts officially opened the shop and was joined by more than 60 people who toasted the start of another growing season.

Those who attended were also given the chance to become 2006 allotment association members for £2.50. You do not have to own an allotment to be a member.

The shop is open from 10am until noon every Saturday until the end of October and welcomes anyone who has a love for gardening.

Cllr Roberts also saw the newly-constructed compostable and non compostable areas for use by allotment holders only. These improvements have been made possible by a sustainability grant which was awarded to the association and

boosted by a contribution from Wrexham County Borough Council which runs the Price's Lane site.

'Our most senior allotment holder Jack Edwards, who will be celebrating his 97th birthday later this year, was also present at the event,' said Allotment Association Wrexham secretary Andrea Evans.

'Many more people are seeing and feeling the benefits of running an allotment. As one allotment holder told me: 'You know exactly where your food is coming from and how fresh it is'.'
