A CREWE Alexandra shirt was on top of the world this winter - when it was taken to Mount Everest.

It’s wearer, 49-year-old building site manager Brian Stafford, of Birch Avenue in Crewe, attempted the climb up the ultimate peak over Christmas and New Year.

Brian, a keen hill walker and mountaineer since he was 14, took his beloved shirt with him, which he joked would be the highest the Alex will get this season.

He said: “I got to base camp at 18,000ft and put the Crewe shirt on. It took us two weeks to get up there, but because it’s not climbing season, we went up a bit higher to 19,500ft, in temperatures of -25°C.

“This was my first trip to Everest, it’s been a bit of a life’s ambition.

“I’m a big fan of Crewe Alex which is why I brought the shirt with me. The team aren’t doing much at the moment but I’m a season ticket holder and I’ll still be there on a Saturday.”

Brian left England on December 21 and returned three weeks later on January 10. His previous efforts have seen him scale the major hills and mountains of Wales, and most of the Munros in Scotland.

He said: “Christmas was a bad time to go try Everest for a family reason, but a better time for the views.

“I originally went out with a view to going to the top at some point, but I’ve now decided I’m not going to go back because I missed my two grandsons so much. I’d like to take my them up there myself one day.”
