Witton Albion 2 Ashton United 1
WITTON remained 10 points clear of main rivals Fleetwood, although both title contenders had more difficult jobs than they might have anticipated on Boxing Day.
Fleetwood scraped home against relegation fighters Kendal and Albion chalked up their third win of the season against Ashton, who proved stubborn.
All the goals came in a five minute first half blitz.
Kyle Wilson put Witton ahead direct from a free kick in 36 minutes and two minutes late Dave MacPherson started a move that was completed by Neil Wood’s superb cross and a great header by Adam Warlow.
The notion of a strightforward and perhaps bigger victory was knoced on the head in the 41st minute when Ben Smith reduced the arrears and gave Ashton reason to battle all the way through the second half.
Witton were able to match them and extended their unbeaten league run to a new record 21 games.
WITTON: Kennedy; Coo, Pritchard, Barras, Brownhill; Wilson, Wood, MacPherson, Brodie; Thornley, Warlow.
