A FIRE at a house in Austin Street, Northwich, in the early hours of Tuesday is believed to have been started by a halogen lamp.

The lamp had been left lying face down on the flat roof of a kitchen extension and the heat radiating from it overnight is thought to have been enough to have burnt through the bitumen felt roof and set fire to the timber joists.

The occupants, a young couple, managed to escape unhurt after being woken up by smoke alarms.

Firefighters were quickly on the scene and spent an hour putting out the fire and checking for hot spots.
