ONE of the region's most important roads, which links the Wirral peninsula with the rest of the North West, is in line for a major upgrade.

The five-mile stretch of the A41, between Woodside Ferry in Birkenhead and Eastham, is the subject of an independent study which aims to improve the image and environment.

Just over £11,000 from Wirral Council, Merseytravel and the government's Single Regeneration Budget, is being invested in the study.

It will be led by Groundwork Wirral and will look at ways of improving the "Gateway to Wirral."

Many of the region's major businesses are located in this area, including Unilever and the Wirral International Business Park.

Wirral Waterfront Initiative, which is responsible for improving and regenerating Wirral between New Brighton and Eastham, has instigated the study.

David Ball, executive manager of Wirral Waterfront, believes the improvements will pave the way for major investment from companies, particularly car showrooms and car sales.

Derelict sites along the road, which is used by 13,000 vehicles a day, will be landscaped in preparation for new investors and high-illumination lights are also likely to be installed.

Additional signs, welcoming visitors to the peninsula, are also likely to form part of the project.

Mr Ball added: "This area is the main gateway into Wirral and a shop window for Birkenhead town centre.

"Visitors from Liverpool and other areas may travel along this route to reach us.

"We regard this as a very important area and the study will help to enhance this part of the peninsula."

Mr Ball said: "We cannot say at this stage how much the project will cost.

"We expect the study to be completed by January and intend to start work in April."

The work is likely to take between two to three years to complete.

Coun Phil Davies, deputy leader of Wirral council, said: "The aim is to bring this area to a high standard, with a quality environment, together with a reduction in crime and traffic congestion.

"We want to make this area the flagship corridor and improve the quality of life for people living in this area and also for potential investors."

Coun Davies believes new jobs will be created.
