A COUNCILLOR and Wrexham firefighter has been honoured with an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday honours list.

David Bithell, based at Wrexham fire station, received the award for his services to local government and the community.

Cllr Bithell has just completed 36 years working as a retained firefighter and later as watch manager at Wrexham.

In addition to his work with the fire service, Cllr Bithell has been a councillor in Wrexham for 16 years and is a governor at Wats Dyke and Rhosddu primary schools. He lives in Rhosddu with wife Virginia.

Cllr Bithell is also a charity fundraiser and organised a sponsored walk in Wrexham town centre on Saturday to raise money for Hope House, Nightingale House Hospice and the Firefighters Charity.

He said: “I am thrilled to have been honoured and would like to thank all my friends, family and colleagues at North Wales Fire and Rescue Service for their support.”

Simon Smith, chief fire officer, added: “We are very pleased that David has been honoured for his hard work in serving the community of Wrexham.”
