WREXHAM will claim a share of a £1m jackpot if the Football League's 72 clubs score a record number of goals between them this season.

New league sponsors Coca-Cola are making the six-figure prize fund available for all 72 teams to share if they can score a total of 4,500 or more in the coming campaign.

The money will go towards funding a young up-and-coming or apprentice player at each of the clubs for a full season.

The sponsorship comes at a critical time for league clubs, who are still struggling to make ends meet since the collapse of ITV Digital.

Dragons boss Denis Smith, meanwhile, yesterday attended a referees' meeting at West Brom's Hawthorns stadium while his first-team squad was given a day off.

Smith and his fellow managers were informed that players sent-off in the coming season will serve their suspensions immediately, rather than waiting a fortnight for their bans to begin.

"It makes sense to me," said Smith. "And there will be an appeals procedure, which shows things are moving forward."

Striker Chris Llewellyn is struggling with an ankle knock picked up in training on Tuesday and is rated doubtful for Saturday's friendly at Hereford United.
