So many shops and businesses have come and gone in Chester City Centre over the years and lately it seems there is a new one opening almost every single week.
We still have our Market Hall however, and for decades it has been providing Cestrians with their fresh produce. The market used to be situated on Northgate Street next to the Town Hall, where it traded for more than 100 years before it moved to its current site on Princess Street in 1967 when the whole of the market hall area was redeveloped into the Forum.

The move didn’t go down too well with locals at the time as it meant the beautiful Victorian architecture of the previous building had to be demolished. But here you can see images of how the former market used to look, as well as what the shops on Blacon Parade were like in the 1970s.
Other images of shops and businesses we have found with thanks to Chester History & Heritage Centre, include Irene’s hairdressers on Brook Street which apparently specialised in perms, and how Tesco on Frodsham Street used to look - much different to how it does today.
