Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service visited West Cheshire College students to demonstrate the dangers of drink-driving and to raise awareness.

Students had the opportunity to drive a go-kart whilst wearing special goggles that impaired their vision, creating a safe simulation of how drinking alcohol could impact their ability to drive safely.

Firefighters also discussed with students the effects of drink-driving and the dangers it can cause to themselves, their passengers, other people on the road and pedestrians.

Vice principal Caroline Fidmont said: “The demonstration was very interesting and it definitely raised awareness amongst our students.

“Many of our students are young drivers so it is extremely important that they educate themselves about the dangers of drink-driving.”

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service’s road safety officer Peter Shields said: “I’m hoping that the students follow our advice on drink-driving.

“We want to get the message across that one death on our roads is one too many.

“All too often we attend road traffic collisions which have life changing impacts on individuals and their families.

“We want people to seriously re-think their drinking behaviours and keep themselves, their families and others safe.

“The real message is if you are driving, don’t drink!”
