DOZENS of Chester FC fans have chosen a community group who helped to rebuild their favourite club for the Your Champions 2010 Team of the Year category.
Although only one nomination is necessary for a group or individual to be counted for in our search for the heroes of our communities, City Fans United (CFU) has attracted votes from across Chester and Flintshire.
Praise has been given for many aspects of the group, which was formed last November when it became clear Chester City FC, under the then-ownership of the Stephen Vaughan family, was on its way to extinction.
Fan and one-time backer of the Blues, Paul Baker, of Hawarden, said: “In the space of four months they have rebuilt and restored the pride which was sadly destroyed by the previous regime.
“If it was not for CFU me and a few thousand others would be lost in a vacuum.”
Jim Dye, of Westbourne Road, Chester, said: “These people have done what many thought impossible – brought Chester FC back to life and ready to play competitive football again after the club was destroyed.
“They have brought new fans to the club, plus a lot of old ones, and reached out to the community to make Chester FC a genuine ‘people’s club’ owned by the people for the people.”
Robert Hayward, of Greasby, the Wirral, said: “Going to the Deva Stadium used to be like going to a funeral every week. Now it is happy again.”
Mike Foster, of Covert Rise, Tattenhall, said: “Against all the odds and the weight of history, a group of like-minded individuals who share a passion for their city and its football team built what promises to be a legacy for the city.”
And Luke Arnold, of Newton Lane, Chester: “It feels like we should have done this years ago, rather than put up with false dawn after false dawn of the previous ownership's.
“To know every penny I put into the football is to be used to help the football club is all any fan could ever want.”
Jeff Banks, CFU member and spokesman for Chester FC, was delighted at the fans’ support.
He said: “It is fantastic CFU has been nominated. A lot of work has been put in by a lot of people. It would have been a travesty if we had not had a team this season.
“I think there are so many who deserve the accolade. We have had support from all quarters and everyone should be included in this nomination.”
