TWO pioneers of an athletic Saltney club have been put forward in our Your Champions awards.

Denise Bayley and Debbie Lavender run the Saltney Gymnastics Club in River Lane and have collectively been nominated in the team category of the annual honours scheme.

Sophie Wilson nominated the duo and said: “Both coaches work full-time and Denise works permanent nights in a local hospice to enable her to coach in excess of 30 hours per week.

“The club offers sports acro-gymnastic classes from age three upwards and have elite gymnasts who are in the Welsh squad.

“The club is fun, builds children’s confidence and self-esteem and helps them to work as part of a team. The club keeps many children focused, active and dedicated, learning their routines and keeping them off the streets.

“The club relies heavily on fundraising to keep running, but also help other organisations by performing displays. The coaches are really an inspiration and deserve some recognition for their time, dedication and very hard work.”

Earlier this year the club won a £3,000 grant from Saltney Town Council to pay for new kitchen facilities. At the time, Cllr Dave Evans said: “The work they have been doing internationally has been immense.”
