A SCOUT group leader who has shown great determination to keep his popular troop going after the headquarters base was ravaged by fire has been nominated for a Your Champions award.

Rob Benyon, leader of the Saltney Ferry Scouts and Guides, currently runs the group from the River Lane industrial estate after the Bradshaw Avenue base was hit by the blaze earlier this year.

Undeterred, the group is still packed with Scouts and Guides and is now looking to build a new, bigger and better home on Bradshaw Avenue.

A plan has been submitted to Flintshire County Council and fundraising is well under way through initiatives such as the Saltney Scouts fun day and the ‘buy a brick’ appeal.

Sarah Jones, who nominated Rob, said: “Rob works endlessly for the Scout group. The hut was burnt down two months ago and Rob has kept the group going and set up a fundraising team.

“He puts in so many hours.”

Rob, upon receiving the news he was nominated for Champion Volunteer of the Year, said: “It’s a very nice surprise and really nice people think of me to be nominated. A lot of people help us in getting us back to where we are.”
