MID CHESHIRE youngsters could get the chance to become the next Chris Moyles or Jo Whiley thanks to collaboration between three of Middlewich's youth service providers to launch a radio station.

Middlewich High School, the Microchips internet cafe and youth club and Middlewich Community Church's youth group Impact have come together to launch Fusion - the town's first radio station - in September.

Youth worker Ben Alves explained: 'Fusion is an exciting project which will give youngsters the chance to put together and broadcast radio shows each week. It's a chance to let young enthusiasts get creative and pass news and views on to one another.'

The station will broadcast a weekly one-hour show via the internet and Ben hopes it will quickly grow.

He said: 'At first, groups from the school, Microchips and Impact will put together 20 minutes each but we hope that it will soon grow so that the shows will get longer and eventually we could even attempt to get a radio broadcast frequency. Over time, we will be featuring bands, discussion shows, jokes, more or less anything the youngsters want to create shows about and put on air.'

The three groups will take part in a 10-week training course to prepare for the station, which will be mixed and edited at the Microchips centre by Ben, as well as teachers from Middlewich High and Microchips staff.

Ben said: 'This will be a learning curve for us all, so no-one needs to be an expert right away.

'Over the summer we will be getting people on board, so although we aren't going to begin for a while, anyone interested can come along to Microchips and talk to us about it now, then we can start recruiting a bit later on.'
