POLICE are on the trail of vandals who caused havoc in a grave-yard.

Undercover surveillance teams and high-visibility foot patrols are being stepped up after youths ripped up around 20 newlyplanted trees at Overpool Cemetery in Rossmore Road East overnight on Thursday.

Just days before, police received reports that someone had been trying to break in to an outbuilding in the grounds.

Inspector Richard Rees blasted the actions of the culprits and has pledged to catch them.

He said: 'All crime is unacceptable but when it is committed in a sacred place like a cemetery it is even more disheartening.

'The information we have so far indicates a group of young people are targeting the cemetery.

'Their behaviour has caused extreme anxiety and distress. It is totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated.'
