A SPORTS pitch might have to be closed if vital repair work isn't carried out.

The borough council wants to spend £17,495 to improve 'dangerous' synthetic pitch at Stan-ney Oaks Leisure Centre in Stanney Lane, Ellesmere Port.

A report to the community committee says: 'The condition of the pitch has deteriorated and it is in desperate need of regeneration.

'The sand has become compacted so that the pitch is not draining and is becoming water-logged and dangerous.

'If regeneration isn't carried out within the next 12 months, it is likely the pitch will have to be closed.

'Short-term repairs will extend the life of the pitch for a further two or three years.

'Closing it will result in a loss of income.'
