A woman has been taken to hospital after suffering 'serious injuries' in a crash on the A55.

The dual carriageway remains closed eastbound after the accident on Friday (December 16).

There were three separate incidents between junctions 36 and 38 within the space of 40 minutes.

The woman was involved in a crash between four cars and a lorry near the Posthouse Roundabout (J38) at 4.24pm.

She has been taken to Aintree Hospital after firefighters got her out of her vehicle.

A number of other people have been taken to the Countess of Chester Hospital with believed 'minor injuries'.

A Cheshire Police spokeswoman said: "One person has sustained serious injuries and has been taken by road ambulance to Aintree Hospital.

"A number of other people are believed to have sustained minor injuries and are being taken to the Countess of Chester Hospital to be checked over."

Anyone with any information about this incident is urged to call Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 654 of December 16.

Just 40 minutes earlier a blue Ford Fiesta had flipped onto its roof eastbound underneath the Posthouse Roundabout.

There have been no reported injuries in relation to this and the vehicle has been recovered.

Police were also called to a crash involving a car and a lorry westbound between J36 and A38 at 4.15pm.

A spokeswoman said there have been 'possible minor injuries' caused by this incident.

The A55 remains closed eastbound between Broughton and the Posthouse Roundabout. The westbound carriageway reopened at about 6.20pm.

Drivers asked to avoid the area if possible as Cheshire Police expect congestion to remain 'for several hours'. Highways England say they expect the incident to be cleared by 9.15pm.

Highways have put two diversion routes in place:

Westbound traffic should exit the A55 to join the A483 southbound and following the solid black square on local signs towards Wrexham. Then join the A5102 westbound, B5373 northbound and A550 northbound to rejoin the A55 at Broughton.

Eastbound traffic should exit the A55 at J35A and follow the hollow black square symbol on local signs via the A5104, A550 and B5373 all southbound then the B5102 eastbound to Wrexham and then follow the A483 north back to the A55.
