POLICE are appealing for the public’s help in tracing a man suspected of committing a serious sexual assault in Chester in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

At about 3.30am on January 1, the victim, a 25-year-old woman from Merseyside was walking along Nicholas Street to her hotel after enjoying New Year celebrations with friends when she was approached by the suspect who then subjected her to a serious sexual assault.

The victim is now receiving support from suitably trained officers while enquiries into the circumstances of the incident are continuing.

Detective Sergeant Mike Evans, heading up the investigation, said: “The city centre was obviously very busy that night and we are keen to speak to anyone who may have been in the area at the time, or perhaps passing in a taxi, who may have seen some kind of altercation between a man and a woman outside Nicholas House at around 3.30am.

“I would particularly like to appeal to the Chester based taxi drivers who we believe may have passed the scene of the assault, to think back to that evening and come forward and speak to us with any information that may assist this investigation."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident 531 1.1.12.
