A ‘lonely’ dog whose elderly owner had to move into a care home a few months ago has been brought into the fold of a Winsford family – only for them to discover the poor pooch has cancer.

So instantly smitten with nine-year-old terrier cross Tess were new owners Tina and Roger Westwood, they resolved to raise the money to cover the costs of surgery and veterinary care, and launched an online appeal to help them on their way.

Having raised more than £800 of their £1,700 target the couple say they are ‘bowled over by the kindness, support and generosity of friends and total strangers alike’.

Tina explained that ‘lonely’ Tess had been living by herself in a house. Her only human contact took place when someone went to feed her twice a day.

Wanting to get a companion for their 12-month-old puppy Mollie, Tina and Roger responded to an online advert about Tess and quickly fell in love with her so five weeks ago, she moved in with them.

Calling Tess a ‘huge and important part of the family’ already, the Westwoods have vowed not to abandon her now.

“Tess is loving, playful and obedient; the perfect dog,” said Tina.

“She needs this treatment and had we known in advance she had a history of mast cell tumour removal, we would not have taken her on due to the financial burden of vet bills.

“However, after deciding to take her into our family and subsequently discovering her condition, we could not abandon her and that’s when we decided to raise the money to get her the treatment she deserves.”
