WINSFORD charity the Neuromuscular Centre (NMC) celebrated its 21st birthday last month.

The centre celebrated with the official opening of a new carers’ suite and kitchen, funded by Cheshire West and Cheshire council and Central and Eastern Cheshire PCT.

The centre was founded by Sarah Kelly and Kate Fox who both worked at Hebden Green School with pupils with the condition, having identified limited provision for young people once they leave school.

The duo also recognised the lack of further education and employment opportunities for people with MD and realised that physiotherapy and support ceased once a young person reached adulthood.

Six months of fundraising saw the start of a very small initiative treating only a handful of people.

Twenty-one years later NMC’s physiotherapists are providing 8,508 treatments in a year and NMC Design+Print, the social enterprise, provides employment for more than 20 individuals.
