COMMUNITIES pulled together for a young persons' sports event which has seen the winners go on to bigger things.

Runcorn's Brookvale Recreation Centre hosted competitions in kwik cricket, football, basketball, new age kurling and boccia, featuring teams of 11- to 16-year-olds from across the borough.

The 150-competitor Halton Community Games was a qualifier for the all-Merseyside event, in which most of the winners will compete at Wavertree Sports Complex on Thursday, August 17.

Halton Sports Development and Halton Youth Service organised the heat, which was attended by Halton's mayor, John Swain.

Participating teams were Brookvale, Brookvale Friday Night Football, Castlefields, Ditton, Grangeway, Hallwood Park, Halton Brook, HITS, Murdishaw, Palacefields, West Bank, West Runcorn and Widnes Youth Club.

Halton Brook won the kwik cricket for 11- to 13-year-olds, with Ditton in second. The 14-16 age group saw HITS knock the opposition for six, their nearest rivals being West Runcorn.

Palacefields beat Brookvale to the basketball title for 14- to 16-year-olds.

Football champions were Halton Brook at the 11-13 age group and West Bank's 14- to 16-year-old team. Runners-up were Ditton and Castlefields.

Striking a blow for the women were West Runcorn, who were the successful 14- to 16-year-old footballers, with HITS in second place.

There were also two competitions for young people with a disability.

The new-age kurling was won by Owen Ashworth from Daniel Pye while in boccia, Nicola Barton beat Gemma Rice to take the honours.
