THE landlord of the White Horse Inn in Great Barrow hopes to restore the shop and post office to the village.
John Butterworth who runs the pub has submitted a planning application to convert one of his downstairs rooms in the pub into a village shop.
He hopes also to restore a post office facility in the village. This comes as the village store and Post Office were forced to close this week, as the shop was not making enough money.
Mr Butterworth said: “This has all happened very quickly. Without a village shop and post office we are no longer a village.
“I first heard the news that the shop was to close about three weeks ago, and I decided to look into the possibility of having a shop here.
“The brewery Admiral Taverns have been very supportive of the idea as have the parish council. I have also spoken to the planning department and they say they don’t envisage any problems.
“We hope to have planning approval in around eight weeks and then we can start looking to find a builder. We just have to wait and see now.”
Village Shop Committee Chairman Ann Faulkner said: “We do need a village shop and we are delighted John has got these plans under way, and we do hope to get a shop back in the village as soon as possible.”
