CRIME levels have fallen dramatically across West Cheshire in the last year, according to newly-released figures.

According to Home Office figures, 2,070 fewer crimes were committed in West Cheshire between April 2009 and March 2010 than during the same period in the previous year – a reduction of more than 12%.

And the number of incidents have continued to drop during April to June this year, compared to the same period last year, according to Cheshire Constabulary’s online crime mapping website.

The figures, which show a 12.4% fall in crime overall and a 19.5% reduction in the number of anti-social behaviour incidents, are impressive given the period includes this year’s World Cup tournament, featuring all four England matches.

Western area crime manager DCI Simon Price said: “These latest figures are a tribute to the hard work of officers on the area, from neighbourhood policing to specialist teams. Our working relationships with partner agencies and the community also has a great part to play in the reduction of crime.

“By informing the police about issues they encounter in their neighbourhood, the public are helping officers to gather intelligence and carry out the operations that ultimately see those responsible for crimes brought to justice.”

DCI Price added: “While these figures are very encouraging, I would reiterate my plea to the public to ensure they keep the key items in their lives secure such as mobile phones, car keys and laptops.

“The sneak-in style of burglary, particularly to steal car keys is an issue nationally and we are working with the public to combat these types of burglaries.”
