A COLLEGE’S multi-million pound rotunda development will rejuvenate Ellesmere Port and put the town back on the map.
That’s the view of West Cheshire College principal Sara Mogel who gave The Chronicle an exclusive tour of the construction, which stands as big as Liverpool’s Catholic cathedral, as it now starts to take shape.
She believes that once the hi-tech building is fully up and running in September next year it will give the town a huge boost.
“Sometimes Ellesmere Port has had second best”, she explained.
“But not now. Ellesmere Port’s always been very supportive of the college.
“It makes planning something like this so much easier, and working on it so much easier.”
“I think the development of Cheshire Oaks is fantastic, but I also think that probably the town itself needs a lift.”
Ms Mogel added: “I want the people of Ellesmere Port to see this as their building and to come in.
“Even if all they do is just come in and walk around, have a look at an arts exhibition and then leave.
“But I would love them to come in as customers, have their hair done, eat a meal and fly on our aeroplane!”
When referring to the aeroplane, Ms Mogel is talking about an eating area which will be designed to replicate the inside of an aircraft – a fitting tribute to the airport model on which the rotunda development was based.
She explained: “We took our inspiration as airports not colleges.
“You can go to an airport and you can shop, you can post a letter and have a hair cut, you don’t have to fly.
“That’s our model if you like. You can come to the college, have a good time, do what you want, but you don’t have to learn.”
That said, Ms Mogel is hopeful that once people have had a taste of the facilities on offer it will encourage them to take up a course.
She ranks the facilities on offer as the best in the region, outside of the major cities, and sees huge potential in Ellesmere Port’s strong manufacturing background.
Ms Mogel said: “The interesting thing that's happening at the moment is that the coalition government is putting so much emphasis on manufacturing.
“Now, Ellesmere Port is really well placed to take that up. It has some of the leading manufacturers and a lot of skilled workers. We do a lot of training for people to work in manufacturing. This is Ellesmere Port’s time.”
