HEAVY weather may be to blame for the collapse of a four-metre sandstone wall in a Chester alleyway.

Police were alerted to the collapse of a section of a wall that links between Liverpool Road and Parkgate Road on November 27 just after 9am.

The area was cordoned off with police tape, blocking off access to the alleyway known as Rocky Lane.

Cheshire West and Chester Council later erected barriers to prevent access and is now determining who owns the land so repairs can be carried out.

A spokeswoman for the council said: “The council was alerted that the sandstone wall which goes along the back of the properties had partially collapsed.

“We do not know the cause at this present time, but it follows a time where there was a lot of bad weather which might have exposed the weaknesses in the wall.

“We have contacted neighbours and notified the university that the pathway is blocked off, as a lot of students use that as a cut-through.

“Our job is now to determine ownership. Historically it was owned by the cathedral but it could have changed since then.”
