MORE than 20,000 people will benefit from a United Utilities scheme to 'spring clean' water mains in Great Sutton, Little Sutton and Whitby over the next few weeks.

As part of a North West-wide scheme, jets of air will be blasted through the mains to flush out any naturally occurring sediment in the pipes.

Engineers will work through the night, where practical, to help minimise disruption to supplies.

United Utilities' project manager Andy Bunch said: 'This scheme is essentially a spring clean of the water mains.

'We've already renewed older cast iron mains with new plastic pipes and injecting a blast of compressed air will make sure they remain in tiptop condition.'

The company says it will let customers know if supplies are likely to be affected for a short time.

UU says consumers are unlikely to notice any difference to the appearance of their tap water, but if the work does cause a slight cloudiness then running the tap will clear this.

Mr Bunch added: 'There is nothing to worry about if the water does look a little cloudy as it will soon clear if customers run the first cold inlet tap to their home, which for most of us is in the kitchen.

'Water quality in the North West continues to improve year after year and this scheme will ensure families in Ellesmere Port continue to enjoy some of the best tap water in Europe.'

Work on the £150,000 project, which is due to start mid-February and run throughout March, will involve cleaning 25 kilometres of mains.
