A Chester actor’s Mannequin Challenge Facebook video has attracted more than 1,000 views in less than a day.
But it doesn’t show off Dan Ellis’s thespian art in its best form – instead it is his nan who is the star of the show.
Dubbed #NANAquinChallenge, the 20-second recording shows grandmother-of-four Edith Roberts sitting still in her kitchen, with a cigarette in her hand, a full ashtray at her side and raising a glass of whisky in celebration.
Edith, of Hawarden, and Dan, who will star in Tip Top Productions’ panto Jack and the Beanstalk this Christmas, obviously have a close, and often hilarious, relationship.
Dan said: “She tends to agree to most things I ask her to do as we have as much of a best friend relationship as we do a grandmother/grandson one. I truly idolise and love the woman!
“She loves to laugh, and doesn’t take herself too seriously, and puts me to shame in how naturally funny she is. I really don’t think she has any idea how popular she is with my friends, both online and in real life. She’s acquired something of a legendary status from the pictures I upload. She has been so supportive throughout my life.”
Dan accepts that, despite his youthful good looks, it is nan who will always attract the elusive Facebook ‘likes’.
He added: “It amazes me how I can pick out a picture of myself which I think I look rather dashing and good in, and it will acquire 10 likes over four days, but if I upload a picture of her looking thrilled about having new windows fitted, it gets over 100 likes in about four minutes.
“I went to a university reunion in the summer, and at least six of my friends I hadn’t seen in a few years asked: ‘How’s your Nan?’ before they enquired how I was!
“I think she sometimes worries when something goes online and gets a bit of attention that she may turn into the Kim Kardashian of North Wales, and not make it to the post office without being accosted in the street, but when I show her just how many people have commented how much they love seeing posts and updates about her, she is secretly warmed by it.”
What's it all about?
The Mannequin Challenge is a social media craze started by a group of teenagers in Florida. It involves people being filmed while striking a pose and staying perfectly still.
England's footballers were the latest players to try the craze when they celebrated Jamie Vardy's goal against Spain at Wembley last night. Hilary Clinton, Andy Murray and Beyonce are among the people who have been pictured striking mannequin-like poses since the challenge went viral a few weeks ago.
