Cheshire police are investigating after a driver was caught on camera reading what is believed to the Bible on one of the most dangerous stretches of the M56.

But not only that, with her other hand she stuck her middle finger up to the people recording her.

The woman was clocked on camera at around 10.30am on Sunday (August 7).

You can see from the footage – obtained by our sister paper the Manchester Evening News – how the woman is travelling at considerable speed and is using her steering wheel like a stand to prop up her book.

Her eyes also appear to not be concentrated completely on the road.

Police are probing footage of a woman reading a book while driving on the M56

She was first spotted a mile before J11 for Daresbury heading westbound away from Manchester all the way up to J14 for Hapsford , not too far from the turning for Cheshire Oaks .

The person who took the video says that she kept going over the white lines between lanes one and two.

They said: “She sat with one hand on her book and the other putting the finger up pushing against her window but still looking down at her book. This went on for a mile as she weaved from side to side over the white lines.

“The book looked like it was the Bible. I couldn’t believe it!”

The incident has been reported to Cheshire Constabulary who confirmed they are investigating.

A spokesman for the force said: “We were called at 10.37 on August 7 to reports of a woman driving along the M56 while reading a book. Investigations are being carried out.”

In the past few years, crashes along that stretch of motorway have doubled. From 2010-2014, there were 16 serious or fatal incidents - eight of which were in 2014 alone.
