The new Labour MP for Chester Chris Matheson has told The Chronicle he is ‘exhilarated’ about his historic victory over the Tories in the General Election.

In a video interview with Chronicle chief reporter David Holmes, Mr Matheson said the count at the Northgate Arena was a stressful experience that had left him feeling ‘tired, tired and even more tired’.

He also admitted ‘I am overwhelmed by the responsibility and by everything that happened’ and confessed that he had not yet been to sleep.

When asked when he would get a chance to celebrate, Mr Matheson, speaking during the Cheshire West and Chester Council election count back at the Arena this afternoon, he said it was important to him to see how his local authority colleagues were faring.

“I might have a glass of wine tonight - if I don’t fall asleep beforehand!’ he added.
