A DOZEN dogs and their two-legged friends went walkies to raise money for victims of the Haiti earthquake.

The fundraisers started their six-mile trek round Higher Kinnerton from the Royal Oak pub at 11am on Sunday, and organiser Jennifer Dodd is hoping to have raised £2,000.

Despite the cold weather and snow Jennifer was happy with the turn-out, and says there was around 65-70 people – and a cluster of canines – once the team had picked up ‘a few stragglers’ en-route.

“It was such a freezing cold day I didn’t think anyone would turn up, but in the end it was great fun,” she said.

“All the dogs had a ball, and some of them were very smelly by the end. But everyone had such a good time.

Jennifer, an artist who owns Brookside Gallery on Sandy Lane, organised a fundraiser four years ago to raise money for victims of the Asian tsunami.

This time, all the money will go to help providing diphtheria and cholera vaccinations for people in Haiti.

Two British Red Cross volunteers joined the crew for the walk in case anyone needed first aid, and Jennifer’s mum Barbara, 88, patrolled the streets in her car making sure no one came to any harm.

Jennifer added: “The Red Cross were fantastic. They were so supportive, as they always are.

“I’m hoping we’ll have raised a lot, the target was £2,000 but the more the better!”
