SPEED-CRAZY youngsters backing the idea for a skate park can now see exactly what it could look like.

The Friends of Whitby Park aims to set up a permanent facility - called a 'wheels park' - for skateboarding, rollerblading and BMXing in the park, just off Stanney Lane.

Financial assistance from Lotto grants is being sought to get the wheels in motion.

And consultants appointed to come up with a layout for the project have now produced a detailed artist's impression.

Friends chairman Eric Bowler is arranging for copies to be shown around the 11 town schools, 850 of whose pupils have formally expressed an interest in the project.

They will relay their comments back to Mr Bowler via 14 young representatives appointed from the schools involved to sit on the project's management committee.

Their suggestions will then be incorporated into the final design. The blueprint features a series of challenging flatbanks, quarterpipes, ramps and flyoffs, all set within a fenced-off rectangular patch measuring 18m x 38m.

The facility would be close to the entrance of the park, yet well away from any residential areas.

Mr Bowler said: 'We estimate the equipment is going to cost about £65,000 plus VAT and extras, with the whole scheme running out at about £120,000.

'Just as we have done throughout the whole course of putting the scheme together, we will now be seeking the views of the most important group of all - the young people who will actually use the skate park.'
