A £200M development which will transform the face of Crewe's shopping centre has been unveiled.

Manchester-based Modus Properties has submitted plans for a facelift designed to drag the Queensway shopping complex and bus station into the 21st Century.

The 1970s-style complex will be transformed into a state-of-the-art venue for retail therapy.

Taking in parts of Victoria Street, Delamere Street and Chester Street as well as Queensway, the plans include a huge department store surrounded by four large retail units and up to 25 shops - with an 840-space car park attached.

Following detailed public consultation, bosses hope permission will be given to begin work on the 350,000sq ft development by spring 2007.

Modus projects director Anthony Kilbride said: 'We are already talking to major national retailers about coming to Crewe.'

The public will get a chance to view the plans during two consultations.

Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council's executive director for the environment and development Paul Ancell said: 'It will give the town a chance to compete successfully against other centres.'

BHS is the first company confirmed as potential tenants.

Public consultations will be held at the Lyceum Theatre, Heath Street, Crewe on Friday, August 19, and Saturday, August 20 from 10am-8pm, and on Monday, September 19 and Tuesday, September 20 between 2pm and 7.15pm.
