VILLAGERS have pledged thousands of pounds to fight a council decision to grant Travellers’ sites on their doorsteps.

Villagers in Dunham Hill launched a campaign against Cheshire West and Chester Council after they approved a temporary Travellers’ site on Hillcrest, Chester Road.

Now three villagers have pledged £1,000 each to help battle the authority in court if their letter, email and petition campaign fails to stop more sites appearing on their Green Belt fields.

So far villagers across Dunham, Hapsford, Helsby, Alvanley, Mickle Trafford and Frodsham have joined the campaign against the council, demanding to know what has happened to the promised short-list of suitable sites.

Chairman of Dunham-on-the-Hill and Hapsford Council Andy Jones, who is heading up the campaign said: “Everybody is on board. We have arranged more meetings with planning officers and councillors in the next few weeks.

“People have been approaching me and offering donations so that we can take legal action. We have a long way to go until we get to that stage, but if we had to we could each give a little bit.”

A spokesperson for CWaC said: “We feel satisfied that the information provided by our officers to the planning board was correct.”
