SWORDS will smash upon shields once again this weekend (May 8&9) as Vikings play out their annual battle at Marbury.

The Merry Days event will feature about 300 blood-thirsty actors who have been in training for four shows on the paddocks close to St Michael & All Angels Church.

An event spokesman said: “In full battle gear and with a long-boat on the mere the Vikings smote one another all day long watched at a safe distance from the church terrace by a small and bemused gathering of villagers.

“At the sane time their womenfolk practised the traditional skills of weaving and basket-making in the village hall.”

In addition to the Viking battles, there will also be an open dog and terrier racing day and a fun dog show. The ever popular Pinxton Puppets will be on show as well as classic cars, vintage tractors, machinery and motorbikes, trade stands, Scalextric racing, model aircraft displays and maypole dancing. Marbury Merry Days is also celebrating over 30 years of fund-raising for St Michael & All Angels Church.

Gates open at 12.30pm on both Saturday and Sunday. Entry is £4 adults, £3 seniors, under 16s £1.
