A VICAR has hit out at sick vandals who have destroyed a war memorial cross depicting Christ, just days before his church gets ready to celebrate Christmas.

The Rev Peter Walsh of St Thomas of Canterbury Church in Parkgate Road, Chester, has been left outraged after a First World War memorial crucifix was pushed over and smashed.

The church, located close to University College Chester, has now been left with a repair bill which could run to thousands of pounds.

Mr Walsh discovered the damaged memorial as he prepared to hold a morning communion service last Friday.

The damage was also clear for parishioners to see as they gathered for the service which went ahead despite the attack.

Mr Walsh says the memorial is the focus of the church's Remembrance Day commemorations: 'I noticed last Friday how the cross had been pushed over. It's a sacrilegious thing to do. It's very upsetting, especially at Christmas time. It's terrible that someone can do something so bad.

'The top of the cross has broken off with it being pushed down onto the floor. It must have been pushed down with quite some force. I have reported the matter to the police and they are looking into the matter.'

Mr Walsh, who joined the church in June, says, despite the attack, he has no plans to increase security at his churchyard which is often used as a thoroughfare for people.

'We don't intend to close the churchyard. We feel it is best for it to be open to the public and for parishioners who may visit the church for prayers. However, we will be vigilant.'

Mr Walsh hopes the cost for repairing the memorial will be met by an insurance claim but would welcome donations.

'It is going to cost several thousand pounds. We would welcome donations although we are claiming on our insurance.'
