A PEACE campaigner has accused the Labour government of 'gross hypocrisy' in telling young people not to carry knives and guns yet promoting weapons of mass destr uction.

Grandma Joan Meredith, 78, of Brereton Close, Malpas, was arrested outside Faslane nuclear submarine base in Scotland yet again and says Tony Blair should hang his head in shame.

She said: 'It's the hypocrisy of it which gets me. They are telling young people that they don't need to carry knives and guns in cities to keep themselves safe - because young people are saying they need them to defend themselves.

'Tony Blair uses the same argument when it comes to why we should have the Trident nuclear weapon. The difference is Trident can kill millions of people.

'If those weapons are ever used it will put arguments about climate change in the shade because the weapons would fundamentally alter the balance of the planet.'

Joan will appear in court on Monday after she and other demonstrators locked themselves to each other, blocking the entrances into the base on the River Clyde.

A protest has been taking place there since last October.
