The multi-million pound performing arts centre at University College Chester would have a number of capabilities.

Though it does not yet have a name, it would be made up of metal panels and glass screens to give it a greater shelf life and a cutting-edge design.

During term-time the facility would be used by college students on multimedia, drama or art courses.

Next year will see the launch of a college course in popular music, which will enable students to learn how to stage live events in a working venue, use theatre lighting and record their own music.

Leading music stars may also visit the venue to pass on their experience to students and teach them how to record.

Though the hall can seat 1,000 people, it can be adapted to play to smaller audiences.

A fixed number of ground-level raised seats will always be in place, enabling a large stage area to be used.

Two hundred extra seats can be added to the ground level and the venue will feature two balcony seating areas.

For full capacity, two soundproof hangar-type doors will open to unveil two sections of 250 seats, making 1,000 seats.

State-of-the-art air conditioning will be used and the venue will also boast rehearsal rooms/dressing rooms for artists.

Space will also be provided to enable local artists to exhibit their work alongside that of students.
