VAUXHALL has helped a charity keep moving by donating a new Zafira.

Tom Schmidt, plant director at the car giant's Ellesmere Port plant, presented Chester and Ellesmere Port Young Carers' Project with the keys to the seven-seater, which it will keep for a year.

The project won the car at the Griffin Awards in October.

The awards, which are about to enter their eighth year, recognise and promote the un-sung successes of community action in the areas where General Motors has manufacturing plants.

Presentations are held in both Cheshire and Bedford-shire.

The Young Carers' Project, run by St John Ambulance, works with people between the ages of six and 18 who care for a family member.

It offers fun respite activities and trips to give young carers a break from their responsibilities, in addition to providing academic support, counselling and mentoring.

Kate Wylde, the Young Carers' programme manager said: 'Everyone here is ecstatic.

'One of our biggest issues is transport, as many of the parents are unable to bring their children to the sessions. Vauxhall has given us the best Christmas gift we could have wished for.'
