PUPILS and staff at Upton Heath Primary School in Chester are celebrating after being awarded a grant of almost £600 from Britannia, part of The Co-operative Financial Services (CFS), to make maths fun in and outside the classroom.

The donation, made by the financial mutual’s community fund, enables the school to buy a wide-range of interactive equipment including number tabards, counting songs, an outdoor maths kit, large coins and a money mat.

The resource will replace and update Upton Heath’s existing equipment, helping improve number skills and confidence amongst the school’s 4-11 year-olds for years to come.

Dan Riley, maths subject leader at the school, said: “We are thrilled with the support from Britannia.

“Learning through play will benefit all of our pupils and create an enthusiasm and motivation for maths amongst the children.

“The equipment can help pupils’ discover and develop a greater understanding of numeracy and gain awareness of the importance of math skills in today’s society.”

Britannia’s Community Fund is one way the member-owned financial services provider gives back to the communities it serves.

Mike Rawlinson, manager of Britannia’s Chester branch, added: “Britannia’s Community Fund makes real and lasting differences to local communities.

“We are delighted to support the school’s focus on maths. Inspiring and educating young people about the importance of numeracy can provide the building blocks for increased financial capability, developing skills that will benefit the children throughout their future lives.

“We welcome applications to our Community Fund from any community group that shares our key priorities of promoting improvements to education, in particular numeracy and financial capability.”
