A group of six students from the University of Chester has participated in a large scale conservation activity day, organised as part of National Student Volunteers’ Week (February 22-28).
They formed part of a 60-strong team, including 20 other volunteers from universities across the North West, tackling a number of tasks at Mere Sands Woods in Lancashire.
This nature reserve is made up of 42 hectares (105 acres) of lakes, mature broadleaved and conifer woodland, sandy wet meadows and heaths and has been designed, not only to encourage wildlife, but also for people to enjoy their visit by seeing the plants and creatures in their natural habitat.
Students participated in several activities during the day including pond construction, vegetation clearance, lichen surveys, bean pole making, hedge laying and bush craft (shelter building).
Claire Britton, University of Chester Volunteer Co-ordinator said: "National Student Volunteers' Week is a great opportunity to raise the profile of volunteering and join forces with other universities across the North West for a large scale volunteer activity.
“The volunteers enjoyed meeting other students, while improving their woodland management skills. This was a great day, and the sun even made an appearance!"
Student Volunteers’ Week is a national celebration, which raises the profile of Further and Higher Education Student Volunteering. It is co-ordinated by Volunteering England and is marked by colleges, universities and students' unions.
This annual event was organised by North West 'WiSCV' (Workers in Student Community Volunteers) which is a support network for anyone working in frontline community volunteering projects in Further or Higher Education (FE or HE). The network encompasses both frontline student volunteer workers and those working with staff volunteers in FE and HE institutions, as a networking forum.
