TWO teenage cadets from Chester are the pride of the service after earning two of the greatest honours the county can bestow.
Cadet Sergeant Catherine Clayton from Lache has been appointed Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet for the year 2010-11.
The 17-year-old serves with Chester’s 612 Squadron of the Air Training Corps.
And Cadet Staff Sergeant Christopher Rowan - also 17 - of the Cheshire Army Cadet Force has been awarded the Lord-Lieutenant’s Certificate of Merit as the best Army Cadet in the county.
HM Lord-Lieutenant of Cheshire, David Briggs MBE, made the awards at a special presentation at Fox Barracks in Chester.
The citations were read by Colonel Gerry Wells-Cole, Chief Executive of the North West of England Reserve Forces and Cadets Association.
Catherine’s citation said that she was an outstanding member of the Chester Squadron.
She had been the personal escort to the Commandant Air Cadets when the Chester Squadron won the Sir Alan Lees Trophy as the best squadron in the country.
When the trophy was presented to the squadron, Catherine was the escort to the Air Officer Commanding 22 Group RAF, Air Vice Marshal Barry North.
The post of Lord Lieutenant is held on a rotating basis by the three service-linked youth movements – Sea Cadet Corps, Army Cadet Force and Air Training Corps. It means that the cadet appointed is considered to be the best in the county from their organisation.
Catherine is studying for A levels at Chester Catholic High School and plans a career with the Royal Air Force.
Cadet Staff Sergeant Christopher Rowan from Hoole had a citation which mentioned his leadership qualities and excellent results from the Senior Cadet Instructor Cadre and Cadet Leadership course held at Frimley Park.
Christopher is studying civil engineering at Hartford and Northwich College and plans a career with the regular Army.
BADGE OF OFFICE: Cadet Staff Sergeant Christopher Rowan with his Certificate of Merit, HM Lord-Lieutenant for Cheshire, David Briggs MBE and Cadet Sergeant Catherine Clayton with her Certificate of Appointment and Badge of Office.
