Two former members of 1960s rock and roll band The Tremeloes have been accused of a historical indecent assault.

Leonard Hawkes, 70, and Richard Westwood, 72, will appear at Chester Magistrates Court on Wednesday 2 December.

Both are charged with indecently assaulting a girl under the age of 16 in the spring of 1968.

A spokeswoman from Cheshire Police said: "Following an investigation into non recent sex offences, a 70-year-old man from Surrey and 72-year-old man from Berkshire have been summonsed to Chester Magistrates on 2 December 2015.

"The 72-year old man faces one count of indecent assault, the 70-year-old man faces one count of indecent assault."

Who are The Tremeloes?

Originally called Brian Poole and the Tremeloes, the group formed in Dagenham in 1958 and first charted in the UK in 1963 with a cover of the Isley Brothers’ Twist and Shout.

They continued to have chart-topping success with their own versions of the Contours’ Do You Love Me, Cat Stevens’ Here Comes My Baby and the Four Seasons’ Silence is Golden.

While The Tremeloes are still together today, guitarist and vocalist Westwood left after 51 years’ service in 2012 and Leonard ‘Chip’ Hawkes, who joined in 1966, left for a second time in 1988 to pursue a solo career.
