TWO guiding friends joined 38 others in a 100 mile all female canoe relay from Hungerford to London to mark the Centenary of Girlguiding.

Kate Ashley aged 17 from Malpas and Jessica Colston aged 13 of Huntington, took part in a 100 mile canoe relay along the Kennett and Avon canal from Hungerford to Westminster.

The 40 participants from around the UK ranged in age from an eight-year-old Brownie to an 81-year-old Trefoil Guild member. The baton passed between all paddlers was a parchment which contained a celebratory message ‘With this parchment comes the message of celebration and thanks for the last 100 years of Guiding’

Kate and Jess paddled 35 miles in total, and Kate’s mum Jean was on the water for 78 of the 100 miles while passing the parchment.

Kate who is a young leader with 1st Malpas Brownies said: “This challenge was a fantastic experience for me, paddling through 3ft waves on the finish line under Westminster bridge is definitely one of my Centenary Mountain Top Moments.”
