YOUNGSTERS from Ellesmere Port and Neston who want to go into higher education could benefit from a trust fund set up to celebrate the unique contribution a former council leader made to the borough.

The Fred Venables Higher Education Trust will see up to 10 young people who are about to enter higher education receive grants of £500 each to help them begin university life.

This is the first year the grants have been made available after Shell UK, Fred Venables' former employer, pledged an annual long term commitment of at least £5,000 each year to establish the fund.

Anyone who lives in the borough, is thinking of going into higher education and qualifies for an education maintenance allowance can apply for one of the grants.

Cllr Venables died on January 31 after a career spanning 57 years as a councillor and then as leader of the borough council.

He was proud of his community and determined to do what he could to improve the lives of the people who live here.

He was especially concerned that the children and young people of Ellesmere Port and Neston should get the best possible deal from their education and his dream was that many more young people should have the opportunity of going to university.

Edward Brady, Shell's public relations manager, said: 'Shell is delighted to be able to encourage young people to make the most of their lives. Our financial support is a vote of confidence in them and a way of thanking Fred Venables for his dedication to the people of this borough.

'For us this is not just about giving money. We will continue to take an interest in all the young people who get this award.'

Lynne Fox, headteacher at Cheshire Oaks High School, who is one of the links between the fund and the schools and colleges of the area said: 'Some young people who are thinking of going into higher education and are bright enough to do so can be put off because they think they couldn't afford it.

'My advice is don't give up, there is help at hand. £500 won't pay for everything but on top of the grants and loans that are available it would help you get a laptop computer or some essential equipment.'

To apply for one of the awards pick up an application form from your school or college, or from the council offices at 4, Civic Way, Ellesmere Port or Neston Town Hall.
