A TREE-PLANTING ceremony at a borough park marked the completion of the first stage of a £300,000 project.

Planting took place in Stanney Fields Park, Neston, to celebrate the work so far, including a wheels area, floodlit ball court and children's play area.

The event marked the completion of initial phase of the project and celebrated the partnerships formed.

The project is part of the Parks for People Partnership between the borough council and Groundwork Wirral. Other partners include WREN, Fair Share, Sport England, Barclays Site Savers, Cheshire Police Authority, charitable trusts and Community Safety Partnerships.

The tree planted was a type of maple chosen by the Friends of Stanney Fields Park. Borough mayor Brian Jones attended the ceremony, along with a dozen children from the Ground Force Club at Neston Primary School, who laid the topsoil.

Borough council park development officer Peter Campbell said: 'The work done so far has really transformed the park, providing excellent facilities.'
